Farewell to Smith

After weeks of conjecture and as I wrote the other day, Greg Smith is set to join Essex on a two-year deal.

Good luck to the bloke. Only the churlish wouldn't wish him well and, at the end of the day, all of us are out to get the best deal for ourselves. Yet I maintain that Derbyshire have made the correct decision in withdrawing their contract offer in the light of the player's demands, asserting that their value of the player's worth and his own did not meet.

I read the other day that Essex have offered him £25K a year more than was on the table at Derbyshire and if that is the case, you can't blame the player for going. Yet factor in the approximate £20K a year that an essentially Kolpak Smith will cost when he plays and that is a lot of money. We could probably offer a new deal to Matt Lineker and take on a young player for not much more than that.

Speaking of Matt, yesterday's innings must have done him a lot of good and I feel he should be offered a new deal now. Only one innings, perhaps, but it was the way he batted that impressed and his form this summer has fully justified a contract. Put another way, if we don't offer him a deal, I could see our neighbours Leicestershire doing so and the player coming back to haunt us as Wayne White does every time we play them.

Onto other matters and skipper Luke Sutton has taken flak from some fans for his batting form this season, presumably from people more used to the pyrotechnics we got from James Pipe on occasion. Pipe was a fine player and he played some aggressive knocks for us, but he never captained the side at the same time. Anyone who has ever done that at any level will know how demanding it is, much more in T20 than in any other form of the game.

Sutton will probably acknowledge that he hoped for more runs, yet had few opportunities in T20 to bat for anything other than the last two or three overs. Likewise in the 40-over league, where he has only batted five times at the tail end of an innings.

Yet his wicket-keeping has remained at a very high standard throughout, something even the brilliant Bob Taylor struggled to do when he briefly skippered the side. Interestingly, in the Championship Sutton has scored 531 runs at 24. "Rubbish" cry some, yet Pipe exceeded that total only once in his time at the club. Yes, he had a higher average in his last four years, but that can come down to opportunities and not outs.

I expect Sutton, an intelligent and articulate man with business interests outside the game, to gradually move back and allow Tom Poynton greater opportunity next season. Such a move would mean another captain will need to be identified and he will need to continue the excellent team ethic that Sutton has encouraged. As for Poynton, he will have a tough act to follow, not least as a gloveman, though I am confident that he is eminently capable of doing so.

Irrespective of comments elsewhere, I maintain that Sutton has done a fine job for the club this season. As a leader he was man enough to take some of the flak from the Morris and Brown episode, something a lot of people may have been unwilling to do. His captaincy has been largely sound - all skippers get some things wrong - while his wicket-keeping has been remarkably consistent and of a high standard.

The batting? Based on the above statistics, not that bad really.

  1. Couldn,t agree with you more Peakfan. Sutton has done a good job this season. Yes,he might have contributed a few more runs on occasions but he is an important part of the club. His captaincy has been good, though at times i would have done things differently, but then we all have our own ideas. He can also take his share of credit for the general improvement in our performances this season.

Any criticism,as far as i,m concerned, is based around the Morris saga, with some people blaming Sutton for his departure. It,s ridiculous and people should be grateful we have him. One thing i would do though is swop him with Clare in the batting order.

So Smith is officially gone. I dont wish the bloke any harm at all. My criticism was based purely on performance and i still maintain he shouldn,t have played in recent games, once it was obvious he was leaving. Anyway, thats in the past now. We move on and upwards.

  2. Guys, have to disagree re LS - his batting has been pitiful - captaincy ok - keeping in championship ok but in limited overs games ive lost count of the number of byes ive seen him let through or tried to catch throws in from the boundary one handed etc. A poor season from him in i agree a much better one from the team in general. Tom looks solid with the gloves and is far better with the bat.
Re Greg - cant blame him for going with that deal on the table and good luck to him - ive enjoyed his contribution to the club.

Guess we all have different views dont we and hey it makes for good debate!

  3. Re Smith, we could have done with his bowling today. When we have gone into Championship games without a specialist spinner we have turned to Smith who 9 times out of 10 has put a break on things with his spin whilst we have been able to rotate the seamers at the other end.
Re Lineker, surely we have got to give him a contract. We can't sack the bloke for getting too many runs! Re Sutton, if he is not good enough to play they we need to find another captain.

  5. Tell me the last time Smith took 5 wickets in a championship match Ben. I can tell you and it,s not this season or last. This is my point,he never or very rarely ever made a match winning contribution either with bat or ball. Yes,he would get the odd decent score and the odd wicket or two,but never enough to justify his place either as a batsman or bowler.

I agree with you regarding Lineker, but i say again, what has Sutton done wrong?. It,s a question nobody seems able to answer, apart from this myth about his batting. He is not a front line batsman and has never pretended to be. You can argue that Clare should be in front of him and i would agree with that, but to criticise him for his captaincy and wicket keeping is simply unfair. When talking about byes, nine times out of ten it,s down to poor bowling. Remember Jones in the televised one day game against Worcester. How can Sutton possibly be blamed for such as that?.

  6. Luke Sutton has the 2nd most dismissals in the CC this season - one of only two players with over 50 dismissals.

He has a higher batting average in CC this season than the following keepers: Gareth Cross, Nick Pothas, Jos Buttler, Andrew Hodd, Geraint Jones, Jon Batty and Richard Coughtrie.

  8. Peakfan, I am not sure what Luke Sutton's recent poor form has got to do with James Pipe? Leave Pipey out of this one! In their hey day Pipe and Sutton were both decent wicket keeper batsman. Pipey retired though whilst his game was still in shape unfortunately for the past two months Sutton has given the impression of a guy who has had one season too many which is a shame because like Pipey he gives his all.

  9. Sorry Ben, disagree. Your comment holds no water when looking at the stats above. And if you're criticising him, comparisons with a player rightly regarded as good are valid.

  10. Peakfan, to keep realing out stats on Sutton doesn't solve anything. We all know that he has been a decent county player over the last 10 years but for the past two or three months his form has not been at the level he has previously played at and this must be a concern.

  11. Yeah, for him too mate, but his captaincy and keeping have been good and two out of three ain't bad!
