Post mortem on defeat

It was a shame that, after a number of impressive performances in recent weeks that Derbyshire chose their latest TV appearance to go back to old habits last night.

I actually switched the commentary off as you could almost hear the ‘tut, tut’ in the commentator’s voices and they came out with comments that were borderline patronising at times.

We’re better than that and once again the fact remains that we have to be at 100% in every game to succeed or to at least compete. Whether we eased off mentally, having beaten ‘big fish’ like Durham, Yorkshire and Warwickshire already and run Lancashire very close, I don’t know. The fact remains that in the context of T20 last night’s target was a relative breeze and we made a right cobblers of it.

Last night I was a little harsh on Ross Whiteley to suggest he was among those who gave it away, when the youngster was one of the better batsmen and at least played a couple of impressive strokes. Wes Durston went to the only ball that really turned and his dismissal sowed seeds of doubt in the minds of others. Martin Guptill chipped an easy leg stump four to deep square leg, Garry Park top edged a sweep and Chesney had the sort of night that highlighted his inexperience.

The big West Indian seemed to adopt a ‘four or bust’ attitude last night, not really the route to success in such conditions, while his running gave a bad name to frantic. The skipper was sold down the river and Hughes almost did the same to Garry Park. He’s a young talented lad and he’ll learn, but his inexperience showed last night.

We just needed a little savvy, the sort that Sutton might have provided. Madsen looked like he’d sussed things too, before playing for turn that didn’t happen. It was disappointing stuff and we need to put it out of our system and regroup before tomorrow night in what is still a very open section. Qualification is there for the taking for any team that can string some results together and that could be us as much as anyone else.

I’d have to say though that the wicket disappointed me. With the club’s new-look facilities there in front of the nations’s cricket audience and a potential local following there to be impressed, the evening produced only two sixes (from memory) and a handful of boundaries. Strokeplay, while not hazardous, was not straightforward either. Those who have seen the club’s impressive attempts at selling the competition and tuned in to see if it would be worth their while will have been mystified at the lack of the accepted T20 ‘action’.

Having said that, it was a good game of cricket with sadly the wrong result and not enough sixes for those for whom cricket isn’t otherwise cricket. It may have been a ‘blip’, such as that experienced by Somerset the other evening. What we now need to do is bounce back against Northamptonshire tomorrow night. Like Worcestershire they have their share of good players; like Worcestershire I wouldn’t say they were man for man any better than us on paper.

The thing is, we need to prove that tomorrow on grass. I said earlier in the week that two wins from the next three games would set us up quite nicely. We’ve thrown one away and now need to address that tomorrow.

Come on though guys. One defeat. No need to get TOO worked up at this stage.

  1. Peakfan,we cannot afford to throw these sort of games away. Its not good enough. What was the plan?. More to the point, why wasn,t it carried out?. Look at the dismissals.

GUPTILL. Bad ball, awful shot. Picked out the ONLY man in the deep. Inexcusible.
DURSTON. No foot movement at all. Should have been playing for the obvious turn away from him.
HUGHES. Looked like a poor number 11. Out to a delivery that should have been either left alone or with a bit of foot movement, dispatched towards the A61. Responsible for the stupidest run out ive seen for ages.
MADSEN. Played across the line to a straight ball. Basic stuff.Minimal foot movement again.
PARK. Why try to sweep a ball to square leg that pitches two feet outside the off stump?.Inexcusible.
SUTTON. Should never have to buy another pint all season if Hughes is around!.
WHITELEY. Poor shot to another nothing delivery.
CLARE. Had the sort of match he probably wishes had been rained off.

Not much point mentioning the rest.

So what was the batting plan?. Surely to play sensibly, dont take unnecessary risks and wait for the bad ball. If it was something along those lines, then why wasn,t it carried out?. Don,t they listen or are they incapable of using,to quote your words,a bit of savvy?. The fact that Somerset blew it is of little comfort to any of us.They do it far less frequently. Why do we never seem to learn anything?.

  2. There seems to be fast growing critisims about Luke Sutton which are falling on my deaf ears. I have said before that after all the trouble with John Morris, if one of them should go then both Sutton and Morris should have gone.
Its been a shambles since Morris has gone and I don't see it changing. A good number of members I spoke to last night at the ground vowed not to renew their memberships next season.

  3. Oh come on now, JM time at the wasn't exactly amazing take off the rose tinted glasses 'anon', when the team did bad the players were to blame for not listening, when the team played well JM took the credit.

I had no problem with AB, always got on well with him and he seemed a decent bloke, JM however came across as arrogant condescending and cocky. But none of that has any correlation to actual events as only the players know what they were like behind closed doors.

Why the witch hunt for Sutts, he merely was the spokesman for the players, its been explained that JM lost the dressing room but people still want more. Why should Sutts go, he said it wasn't right when he arrived so maybe someone should ask why the PREVIOUS captain didn't do anything about the problem that existed?.

We have a new coach and a new plan in the place by the Chairman and I for one intend to back the team the whole way. Talking about the past is detrimental and serves no purpose at all anymore. I learnt that with my comments about the committee.

LS is going nowhere, neither is CG. JM has gone and its time to move and get behind the team in my opinion.

  4. Fair comments Chris. Can,t understand this fascination some people have with Morris. Had he been remotely successful then fair enough. As i keep reminding people, the team we are watching now was constructed by Morris, over four winters. If anyone can provide evidence of any significant improvements over this period,im all ears. Look at the facts, look at the playing record. They speak for themselves.

Like you say,the past is the past and we must concern ourselves with the here and now, which hopefully will see us win tonight, assuming the weather forecast is wrong!. No doubt Mr Krikken will have had a few choice words following Wednesday,s debacle. This time i hope they will take heed.

  5. Just one other thing Chris. You ask why the previous captain (Rogers) did nothing about the situation. He did. He left!.

  6. My team for tonight. in batting order.

    (1)Sutton
    (2)Guptill
    (3)Park
    (4)Durston
    (5)Madsen
    (6)Hughes
    (7)Whiteley
    (8)Smith/Poynton
    (9)Needham
    (10)Groenewald
    (11)Knight

Plenty of slow bowlers and in theory, plenty of batting.

  7. Why make changes and majorly reshuffle the batting line up? do you remember the 190 we got against lancs, the 185 and 175 against durham? Wednesday was absoulutely awful everybody could see that but come on, its still a relatively inexperienced t20 team so you can't expect them to fire every game.

  8. I would agree with you Marc on the basis of dropping Clare, as he's got 1 wicket at an average of 74, bowled less overs than Hughes and has a high score of 12 in T20. However i'm not sure about pushing Sutton up to open, as he's scored a grand total of 2 runs so far this season in T20.
If Smith's fit i'd play him, if not another batsman either Poynton or probably Redfern, we've got plenty of bowling in the likes of Park and Whiteley as well as Durston and Hughes who can contribute as well as three front line bowlers. And why has Tony Palladino not played in any of the T20s yet?
    My Team:
    Guptill
    Durston
    Hughes
    Madsen
    Park
    Smith / Redfern
    Whiteley
    Sutton
    Groeneweld
    Jones / Palladino
    Knight

  9. And i don't really get all the criticism about Sutton. He stood up for the team and did what he, and many others, believed was the right thing.
On the pitch he's contributed with the bat in the CC, scoring 359 runs at an average of 32.63. Not bad for a number seven who's batted with the tail a lot.

  10. Palladino must be in with a shout for tonight he scored 100 of 64 balls for seconds against yorkshire and has a decent t20 bowling record.

  11. sutton may have played well in the championship but this is one-day and all need to justify their place. maybe he is doing too much, batsman keeper and skipper. we could play the young keeper who i believe can bat and let sutts think more about the game as a whole to mastermind victory in this fast paced game.

  12. Ive put Sutton up to open because i think he,s better suited there and not later when we need a bit of heave ho. Park is 3 because that,s where he bats best. The middle order consists of the four best hitters, five including Smith. As i said, the bowling is mainly spin as this is proving more successful than seam, for most teams at the moment. Trying to get the best out of what we have available.to You might include Palladino for Groenewald.

  13. People keep referring to 'Chris Grant's Plan'. It is exactly the same plan as John Morris put to us without dressing it up as 'groundbreaking' and 'landmark' LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  14. In what way is it the same, Anon?

  15. Chris Grant says that we are having an overseas player, specialist coaches and we are going to play some home grown players. There is nothing new, we have been doing this for years!

    ReplyDelete
  16. No, we're going to PLAY 9 home grown players. We're going to pay young players the going rate, involve them more and train them for future careers. We're going to sign a world-class player and put him in charge and have a seamless structure from top to bottom.
Now tell me we've done that for years...
