So how is the academy?

Interesting question on 606 for once, asking how fans would rate our academy.

For what its worth, I think it is doing a good job, but players are not developing as quickly as we might wish. Of course, some burst on the scene then get found out, while others take their time to burst into full flower.

Next season could see a much different Derbyshire side that could feature Borrington, Redfern, Hughes, Sheikh and Poynton on a regular basis, all products of the system (OK, I know Hughes was picked up from Anguilla...)

With Clare likely to be in the mix alongside Madsen, Park, Footitt and Groenewald, the Derbyshire eleven looks to be a transitional one. We don't know about Rogers, Peterson, Smith or Wagg, nor who may come in to replace any players who might leave. Let's take this notional side:

Borrington
Madsen
Hughes
Park
Redfern
X
Clare
Poynton
Needham
Groenewald
Footitt

Here's a new poll for you. Would you be happy with and more understanding of a young Derbyshire side, even if they did little next season?

I look forward to your answers...

  1. Does each club get the same money for their academy?

  2. Poynton got good enough I'm afraid but agree with most of the rest.

We'll more than likely get thrashed either way so might as well go for the youth and hope one or two come good.

  3. Sad to say but |Needham not good enough, redfern not looking the same player he was. Time also to get rid of Whitely. 22 years old and only a few games, not good enough times seen him play.
Unsure about Poynton. Borrington only seems to be able to hold an end up

Sheikh looks good, hope redfern can re-discover his form
Hope the next crop is better

  4. Whiteley got a double hundred in the county league last week and I gather he hit nearly 20 sixes. He can hit the ball which is where we have been lacking in most of the one dayers again this season. He might be worth a look at in the last few one day games before we write him off!

  5. Yep, may as well play him if that's the case - can't do much worse than the rest of the rubbish we've seen most of the season (one or two excepted)

  6. Redfern has never even dominated at 2nd eleven. Never dominated for England 19s. Selection based on potential every time. Needham4england
